Giving Thanks, The Nut House Way...

... is always an adventure.

The stress of impending company for dinner caused Little Boo to have a recurrence of her stomach bug. Thanksgiving morning was spent controlling the bathroom traffic while coordinating dinner. Those are two topics which should never be in the same sentence.

The moral of the story is: if you want to visit us, fine. Just don't tell us you're coming.
:)

And so, our dear friends who were to join us for dinner at our home, ended up with half of ours at their house, while we ate the other half at our house.

Talk about solidarity.

Of course, we are not alone in this sickness, our own Margaret had me smiling in recognition as she recounts their low key weekend. She does it with much humor and grace. Thank the Lord for that!

We spent the day yesterday and today buying Christmas decorations. We have become the people we used to mock, I told DH today. You know, the first ones in the neighborhood to get out the Christmas lights and start decking the halls, or the front porch, as the case may be.

But we have a valid excuse.

This time last year we were packing and preparing for a month-long vacation in the snowy mountains. All of our Christmas decorations remained boxed up in storage and have been there since '06. Time to break 'em out and get 'em up!

And so we have.

After a quick trip to the store for advent candles, I'm feeling a bit ahead of the game this year.

Here's to a prayerful, hope-filled Advent!

Thank God for Solidarity.

The day before Thanksgiving, and like all good Mamas, I am sitting in front of the computer.

:)

The list on my fridge is a mile long, and copycats the lists of millions of other Moms in the US today. I take comfort in this knowledge of shared duties.

If I were a film maker, I would pan over the entire country, coast to coast, and show many types of moms, pulling out pumpkin pies and mixing up dough, cleaning their homes, and finally soaking in their tubs after a long day of preparation.

And then for Thanksgiving Day itself, I would show clips of the Macy's parade, the football games, the kids running around with friends and relatives, the dads drinking beer, and the moms sipping wine in their kitchens, basting the turkey and chatting...

And hopefully, the heads bowed in silent reverence, thanking God for the blessings of this year, for the joys and the sorrows, for how it all brings us closer to Him and to each other. The prayers of petition, for our country and our families, to bless us for yet another year, to bless and comfort the poor and the lonely, the forgotten and uncared for. To hold them close this holiday season.

For this one day, may we all turn and acknowledge our God and Creator, recognizing Him from whom all good things come. To bless us with enough joy and pumpkin pie to last all year.

Fullness

I hope you do this sometimes, because I sure need to know I am not the only mom-of-many who wonders what it's like to live the other life. You know, the one I specifically did not choose.

I made a run up to the froofy-trendy grocery store up the road yesterday afternoon. I needed some solitude and a few groceries. Froofy-trendy does the trick!
:)

As I drove DH's oldish black economy car, a white BMW whizzed by. And my other self that didn't exist whizzed right along with it.

What would it be like, I wondered....
~to zoom around in my BMW, perfect nails, hair and outfit, ready to take on the world.. or at least my part of it?
~to not have to rush home to accommodate the schedules of 5 little ones and a husband eager to get out and enjoy the day?
~to not have to cook and assemble meals 3 times a day, 7 days a week?
~to go out with my friends, to chat, to spa days (what are those anyway? they sound amazing...) for drinks, to movies, or just to hang out....
~to not have to comparison shop for Bay Leaves, for goodness sake, and just get the $6 Spice Island brand?
~to not have to homeschool? :)

What would there be left, I pondered, once I took away all of my duties? It would all boil down to me.
ME.
ME.
ME.
ME.

And my life would be completely boring and worthless,I decided. And I would become an extremely shallow busy-body. Shallow because there would be nothing worthwhile in my life to care about, and a busy-body because I would be trying in all the wrong ways to care about something. **Disclaimer... I know many wonderful people who are called to live out their sanctification by being single. And they are not selfish in the least. I also know that I would have a much harder time being unselfish if I weren't constantly being forced out of my comfort zone by these little beings who surround me daily and who hold the keys to my heart.

My life is full. There is no getting around that. Every moment of my day is filled with children or dishes or housework or children or dishes.... you get the picture. But as I zipped around the store, pondering prices and reading recipes, my glimpse gained perspective.

There is a very real, very worthwhile reason for everything I do.

The older cars, the comparison shopping, the lack of free time and money for endless shopping trips and spa days, at times even the friendships that have to be put on the back burner because of my duties here at home... all of this is because I am the mother of many little ones. Every sacrifice I make is for them and their comfort. For us, and our home-filled comfort.

My life is not about me. No-one's is. But I am the steward of it, and the helpmate of this little family.

(Here's Little Love pictured on our walk yesterday to the duck ponds in front of the froofy-trendy monster-houses part of town. Given the choice? Yeah. I'd have chosen the little cutie over the monster house any day)

And that is a fullness I can revel in.

Since I Haven't Seen Her in Awhile...

... I'll play along with Matilda long distance!

What Your Height Says About You

You are a true adventurer, and you live for the thrill.

You have a lot of charisma, and you're good at convincing people to join you in your schemes.

You are open to the world, and you make connections easily. You have lots of friends.

You are likely to have many life paths to choose from. There are many possibilities open to you.

You are about as tall as the average British man.

Just the pick-me-up I need this weekend after our disappointing cancellation and sickness. Luckily, we have lots of family sports stuff going on. Not as hectic as you might be imagining, though, since we'll be watching a hockey game here at home at 1pm. Which, btw, has my peanuts torn asunder, given their new-found love of the Penguins thanks to the Stanley Cup Finals last year. Should be an interesting afternoon of rivalry between them and DH.

After that rousing game, I'll take a few of my peanuts over to the college to watch my sister's basketball game. And then, hopefully, I'll get to take her out for a nice sisterly dinner.

:)

Have a great weekend, y'all!

Another Thing You Do When Expecting Company...

Your husband contracts the weirdest throat virus ever... that happens to be HIGHLY contagious.

Your Little Boo gets a stomach bug.

And your company cancels.

The end.

When Company is Coming...

You certainly don't blog.

You definitely don't Facebook or Twitter.

You do decide to host Bunco at your home the evening your guests are arriving, figuring that if they arrive around 11pm, you should be able to kick your friends out by 10:30... right?

You spend countless hours finagling the upstairs to accommodate sleeping arrangements for 4 adults and 11 children... thinking that it would be best to leave the downstairs free for endless playtime and chat time.

You wash the windows of your home, inside and out, at 7:30 am because in your world, that is the highest priority.

You also decide to re-cover the cushions of the window seat in the home school room, and make two pillows to match. Again with the priorities. And not having accomplished that yet is giving you anxiety attacks.

And even though your guests will only be here for 4 days, baking breakfast breads and desserts, and shopping and assembling meals ahead of time is a must. Your pantry hearkens back to the Y2K days.

Your home looking like three tornadoes have set up shop, you ignore the mess and the lists of duties and blog.

Because you know that only your blogging friends can fully appreciate this priority, and they alone will be able to affirm this utmost necessity. And possibly be able to relate to the madness that overtakes a hostess's brain.

My Big Boy

Action Man turns 11 today.

It's so hard to believe that the baby who broke us in, (and down, at times...) is so big.

Today my boisterous young man received a coonskin cap, powder horn, and moccasins from his grandparents, a much-appreciated check and card from his other grandparents, and a boonie hat and R/C laser shooting helicopters from us.

Now you can appreciate why he was dubbed "Action Man."

He is full of life and ideas, forever being fueled by his supreme love of reading and research. This guy lives life to the fullest, and while there have been struggles along the way, he is making huge strides, and we are very very proud of him.

Happy Birthday, my big guy!

To Find The Joy

Today has been one of those days.

A day where:

1. I got a ticket for doing a California stop at a stop sign, b/c I was late picking up the little girls. Of course, being pulled over made me even more late... ergo, yeah. Stupid stupid move.

2. My main job of cruel dictator/teacher/referee was wearing on me. And the thought of this job title becoming a tenured position for me was enough to send me packing.

3. Dealing with friends who can't see the forest for the trees would be frustrating on a good day... but on a bad day, made me snippy and openly irritated. Sigh. I hate being like that.

4. Hormones are rampant at this time of the month. The progesterone supplements have been stopped, the hot flashes resume, and I wait, resigning myself that once again the answer will be "no." And I must restrain myself from shelling out any more money just to see if an extra pink line will appear. ( TMI? Sorry. But that's what the reality is over here these days.)

So, what is a person to do?

Spend some time...

With my DH who refreshes me, and my Heavenly Father who listens to me and strengthens me. I know there is a bigger picture here, a bigger plan, more glorious and more amazing than I could ever imagine.

In the meantime, I just need to find the joy. And when I can't find it, I need to ask Him to show me. To open my eyes that are blind, and to guide my outstretched arms to be able to embrace it. And to not be afraid to discover that what I have embraced is my very own cross. For this is where my sanctification lies, the path to my everlasting joy.

Hearted

Barbara is so nice to keep me on her sidebar, I just had to show my gratitude by participating! I'm suppose to answer these questions with one word... which is super hard for me, since I always feel the need to explain everything.

Not. Surprised.

You Are Boggle

You are an incredibly creative and resourceful person.

You're able to dig deep and think outside the box to get things done.

You are a non linear thinker. You don't like following directions

You draw your inspiration from the strangest places sometimes. You're constantly inspired.

My brain certainly feels a bit boggled these days!

Heads are Spinning

Well, at least mine feels like it.

1. This past weekend was a doozy, with soccer games and an end-of-season party and our annual neighborhood bash, there were many festivities to attend and much sugar was consumed by my peanuts. I think they are still spiraling down from the sugar high.

2. Life is getting complicated. There. That's an enigmatic statement if I ever saw one. With the dynamic of our family changing, and the lack of newborns in our near future, I feel the pull more and more towards service. DH has noted my tendency to over-commit to things, and is warning me not to put the needs of others above our family. There are truly so many needs out there, and so many causes to support... it's going to take some prayer and discernment to figure out the charism of our little family.

3. Along the same lines of a complicated life, I am also aspiring to.... (surprise!) generate some income from my scribblings. I have two small gigs going, but neither are paying ones (though for one of them I get to keep the products I review!), and I already feel the pressure of performance, and am not sure that this is what I want. The decision remains as to whether I should try to find a paying gig, or just float these things for awhile and get some good experience. So, yeah. Hmmmm.

4. This is sinus season. We have gone through two prescription nasal sprays in the past two weeks. I am hopped up on Benadryl and Mucinex, with a little Flonase and Advil thrown in. I am tons of fun today.

5. And last, but certainly not least.. (*wink wink*) got my hair low-lighted last week. So, while my head may be spinning, at least it's looking good.

:P

Sweeping... a Lost Art

My mother is a fastidious housekeeper. We always joke with her that if we want to save our books and tea cups for further use, we need to permanently fasten them to our persons because once abandoned, they are whisked away to the sink and bookshelf. Same goes for shoes, bath towels and water glasses.

It's all in good fun, because every kid knows that a clean and organized home is truly a joy and a privilege to live in. And a mom who can accomplish this while mothering 6 children is worth her weight in gold. I know we all feel this gratitude toward our dear Mom, even if we do give her a little grief for it every now and then.

One of my Mom's tried and true secrets is the vacuum. As a teenager, I would grit my teeth and bolt for the nearest door when she dragged that thing out. It was loud, and after an hour or so of the noise, I honestly thought I was going to go stark raving mad.

Unfortunately, I'm finding that my attitude hasn't changed much. Luckily for me, though, my children love to vacuum...

:)

I agree with my Mom that it certainly is efficient. Obviously for the carpets, it's an invaluable tool. How else will all of those popcorn bits disappear? And for tile floors, those runaway crumbs that hide under the kitchen cabinets are easily sucked away with a swish of the hose. Virtually every hiding place is uncovered and in seconds rendered completely clean.

I thought about this as I swept the entire kitchen, dining, and entryway of our home. Why am I sweeping? I thought to myself. The vacuum is right there in the closet. It's fast, and does a much better job of it. See? There goes one of those cerulean blue beads that Little Love has been carting around in her favorite box. If I had been using that vacuum, it wouldn't be rolling across the floor right now.

What's that over there? Little Boo's pony tail holder, right under her chair. Goodness, that girl can't stand anything in her hair. She's got the cutest curls, and putting her hair up really brings out those ringlets underneath. I wish she wouldn't scatter her hair accessories all over the house... I should really buy stock in Goody, with all of the money I spend on those things.

Now here are a bunch of pine needles, trying to make their escape from the burn pile by attaching to someone's sock... which is lying over there in the corner. Only in the dead of winter will my children keep their feet covered. The other 9 months of the year they are either shoeless, or sockless, or both.

As I kept sweeping and identifying little bits of our daily life here and there scattered all over the floor, I heard the shrieks of my little peanuts playing their current after-dinner game of "dog and owner" in the home school room together. (the hysteria of it escapes me... so don't feel bad for not getting it.) Just another phase in the ever-changing list of "favorites" they play together. Last week it was pioneer days outside with Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett, but with the time change, the madness and the playing moves indoors after the dinner dishes are cleared.

If I had been vacuuming, I wouldn't have heard or seen a thing. The bead, the pony tail holder, the pine needles from our backyard would have all disappeared with a satisfying swoosh. And while there are times I fire up the vacuum to escape the constant bickering (am I the only one? admit it now... though I know my own mother is above this escape tactic, she is my role model!) this time I was glad to hear only the faint brushing of the broom bristles on the floor as the laughter of my children reminded me of the reason we Moms work so hard.

For the comfort and contentment of those we serve, for those we love the most. Our family and most especially, these precious children.

This is me Today...

(after getting four fillings re-filled, two on either side of my face)

...From Bill Cosby's perspective.

And the way I'm talking?

My kids think it's hilarious.

And aside from being unable to drink my coffee or eat for fear of swallowing my bottom lip, all is good.

But please do not call me.

Glimmers of Hope

The results of this election are disappointing, to say the least.

But there are silver linings to these gathering clouds.

~The Bishops of the Catholic Church have stood (mostly) in unison in re-affirming the sanctity of human life, with life beginning at conception. And in many diocese', the bishops have shown a strong leadership in being true shepherds of their flocks. That is so very comforting.

~The amount of prayer and sacrifice that has been poured out for the leaders of our country, and for the consciences of our countrymen, may be the single most important aspect of this election. I'd venture to say that this alone might be exactly what was intended in the first place. And it seems like we're in this mode of prayer and sacrifice for the long haul. Not necessarily a bad thing.

~On a more personal level, the events I have been privy too, have been nothing less than astonishing. Our own Elizabeth, whose eloquence and love of her family and her little Sarah Ann fills us with joy. And the commitment of little Sarah's caretakers is so beautiful and hope-filled.

~Any time a new little one is born, there is much hope and joy. So many of my friends are blessed with the grace of new life. It's a miracle every time.

~The story of my lovely friend is unfolding with grace and love and agonizing pain. She miscarried Monday morning and was taken to the hospital via ambulance, with her tiny (no bigger than her pinky!) babe, with extreme blood loss. She offered up all of her suffering and humiliations and united herself to Christ crucified. And when they took her baby away, refusing to release her tiny body to her loving family, we found a sympathetic funeral home who rescued the body, kept it for the family, and charged nothing for their services.

~When speaking with the young funeral director, I kept referring to the "baby" while he kept calling her a "fetus". Then he called with the information that he picked up the "baby" and "she" was at the funeral home, ready for the parents to come get "her". There was a tenderness in his voice that wasn't there before. It brought tears to my eyes.

One soul at a time. One life. One prayer.

The God We Serve is Constant

Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God.

I have to admit a feeling of deep-seated terror this morning as I awoke. The thought of the errors in judgment that could be made with a man in such a position of power who truly does not know the potential for evil in this world.... who, in fact, cannot recognize the despicable evil in his own policies of refusing to protect precious babies who survive abortion... it scares me down to the bottom of my soul.

But then I remember.

Our God is constant.

Our God is faithful.

Our God is justice.

And mercy.

The time for prayer has only begun.

A Dangerous Time

One minute you're waiting for the sky to fall
Next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all.
~Bruce Cockburn

Pretty much sums up my thoughts tonight on the impending election.

Our nation is faced with an amazing opportunity.

It is beautiful that God allows us to have charge over our government, to give us free will to always choose Him.

It is fitting that we suffer the consequences of this choice, whatever it may be.

It is just that making peace with our countrymen is essential to our good as a nation, no matter the outcome.

We pray and have hope that God's grace will shower upon our nation tomorrow.

Because I know y'all are dying to see our costumes....

Reepicheep/ St. Francis' mouse
Davy Crockett/ St. George (minus hat, add cape and sword)

Not bad in the two-in-one department, eh?

We were invited to two Halloween parties, and an All Saints party. We opted to stay home for Halloween and just Trick-or-Treat throughout our neighborhood, and then attend the All Saints' party the next evening. It made for a crazy weekend with soccer and fixing meals for our friends... but it was definitely fun.

Let's get a close-up on my first attempt at "homemade"....

I'm not completely sold on this whole sewing adventure, but the fact that she actually looks like an Indian makes it a success!

God is Good!

Sarah Ann Foss is here.

Mama is healthy, and little Sarah needs some prayers.

Keep checking here for more updates.

God is still good, of course, but we need to keep praying!
