Uh-Oh....

Life in a Nutshell
....here come the Mama-bear claws again!

Remember the old saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me"? I remember yelling this at my neighborhood bullies with all of my might, because, you know what? Those words do hurt.

And so, the latest installment in the battle of the across-the-street bullies.

DS#2 came home after spending two minutes across the street with said bullies. When I asked what was up he said that they were showing my boys some disgusting-looking dolls with blood, gore and knives sticking out of them, saying that these dolls come to life at night and would kill them. Harmless, right? And then, these two bullies said that if my sons said anything mean to them, then they (the bullies) would come over and kill my sons with a knife.

I hauled their butts home.

I spoke to my boys about the difference between being mean and being scapegoats. I coached them on what to say the next time these kids (one boy, one girl) say anything inappropriate to them or any of their siblings. They are to say, "I'm sorry that you feel the need to be mean, we are leaving now..." And walk away.

At this point, though, I highly doubt there will be a next time any time soon.

Although, I just had to interrupt my typing to answer the door...it was the Bullies, wanting my kids to come out again. What for? I wanted to say, so you can scare them half to death again?

But, I know the answer. They actually like my kids. They either have no siblings, or the one they have doesn't play with them. But over here, it's a built-in playgroup! I like that about us too. We can circle the wagons, re-group, do some things together, or separately, as the case may be. (right now, the girls are out back inspecting an orange dragonfly that keeps appearing and the boys are listening to James and the Giant Peach on tape in their bedroom.)

I sent the bullies packing. My kids and their dignity are worth more to me than the boredom of some neighborhood bullies on a summer afternoon.

Relationships

Life in a Nutshell

Women need close friends. We need to be able to let down and let it out. We need someone to relate to us on our own level, and we need that level to be their level as well. We need to be understood and to be drawn to a higher plain at the end of it all. No-one wants to chat with someone who is always besting her "rotten day" story.... (you think that's bad, wait 'til you hear...you get the point)

Luckily, I have some close friends. A few. One of them I love dearly and is really just a super-great-all-around person. (She has 6 kids now!) She listens to me, empathizes, loyally backs me up, calls me (almost) daily, reminds of what is important, and in the end, inspires me to persevere, or move beyond, or pray, or be grateful, or whatever it is I need to do. She is a really really awesome friend. I try to be all of that for her, too. I hope I am!

I have another friend whom I've known longer, who used to be my closest friend. I'm trying really hard to keep that friendship going, but sometimes feel as if I'm doing all the work. She is busy (she has 5 kids too) but she is the type of person who would be busy no matter how many kids she has. Her life is a bit chaotic, and she never has time to just "be". That puts a strain on her, and I want to be sympathetic, but it's hard to be constantly reaching out and not getting any feedback. I need to let it go, but I do care about her and our kids are friends, and it seems like this friendship should endure..... She always says she wants to get together, but doesn't follow through. I don't think she's just being nice....

Yes, I tend to over-analyze things.... :)

But, I think we Moms get too busy. We get wrapped up in our daily-ness, and our projects and chores, and we feel like we can't take a break, or maybe if we finish this "one last thing" .....and all of a sudden, 3 years has gone by, and....where did it go? And maybe many friendships have fallen by the wayside in the process.

Women need friends. We need relationships. Not just me, not just you, but all women. I will keep this in mind when calling my friends for our "night out". No, I'm not bugging you, dear friend, but you need me, you need us. So, put that project away, and come chat. We will all be the better for it.

Ice Cream, You Scream....

Life in a Nutshell

...Mama screams!

Today we went to Sam's Club to test Mama's patience level stock up on a few million necessities for the next two weeks. Every payday we pluck up our courage and make our way through the mazes of mass consumerism, attempting to avoid the traps and enchantments of humongous jars of mayo, dill pickles and spam.

EWWWWWW.

No, seriously, Sam's is a very easy place to drop a couple hundred of DH's hard earned dollars, and come up with absolutely nothing practical.
Ooooh... a "beach party pack"! (even though we are 10 hours from the nearest coast)
And.... a $30 ghiradelli basket of chocolate (including lots of hot chocolate, b/c it's certainly not 105 degrees inside the house, is it?)
Oh! We can't forget the $400 trampoline to jump on! (especially suited for our hot Texas summers...and when we're finished jumping we can use the basket of hot chocolate to warm up again!)

Anyway, it's hard enough to resist those temptations while shopping alone. Lately, I've had a few other irrational beings along for the ride.

5, to be exact.

And I feel like a drill seargent, marching them up and down the towering aisles, directing their attention away from the jumbo-trons blasting Harry Potter, World Cup soccer, and music videos, to the carts coming our way so as to avoid a collision.

We get half-way through the store when I hear it...

Mama, I'm (no, not the bathroom please!) hungry....

(Whew)

Luckily, up ahead is a sweet looking "grandma" waving chicken nuggets our way.

Lunch! :)

She very nicely gives each of the kids a nugget, and I am able to avoid the escape efforts of DD#3 for the remainder of the adventure. All thanks to that nugget.

After loading and unloading at home, and feeding the kids, we need to go to the ice cream store to get some dessert for tonight. Of course, it will not do for me to drive to the store, drag everyone in, purchase a single half-gallon of ice cream and leave.

Oh no.

So, I go to the drive-thru and order half of their menu for the little hobbits. And then find out that we need to go in anyway to get the half-gallon.... Once again, these nice southerners are "with it" enough to realize that I must have about 80 kids in the car, (what with all the junior cones orders) and offer to get my "grocery" items as well, and ring it on the other register for me!

Wow.

And so, here is an official endorsement for Braums, another Texas ice cream tradition.

Overheard....

Life in a Nutshell

...last night at 11:30pm, in Mama and Papa nut's bedroom...

"KA-THUNK"

Mama: (sleepily pushing her hair out of her face and rolling over) Wh-Wh-What was that?

Papa: The dishwasher?

Mama: (incoherent grumbling)

Papa: (patting her shoulder) Don't worry, Mama, I'll protect you from those fierce dishwashers!

My hero.

The Nutmeg I know....

Life in a Nutshell
Along the same lines of "100 things to know about (whomever)" which I have seen on many other blogs....and also because I was chatting with an aquaintance of mine about this-schooling-decision-from-hell, and she said, "The (Nutmeg) I know seems to be loving the (name of school) option"...

And I was a bit taken aback. Obviously, this person doesn't know me very well, and so I can't place too much importance on her opinion. So, this is not a direct response to that. It's more of a "so, what about it, Nutmeg, what kind of person are you?"

So, here goes....

The Nutmeg I know...

1. loves loves loves coffee...in any form
2. is generous to a fault
3. and sometimes gets walked on because of that
4. is very loyal to friends
5. although it may take awhile to get to know her
6. but once you’re in, it’s for good
7. it’s just because she is shy...sometimes mistaken for being snobby
8. is ferociously protective of her kids
9. but most Mamas are
10. is sensitive to other peoples’ comments
11. but puts on a façade of toughness
12. likes to dress hippy-trendy
13. but always dresses how she feels that day
14. enjoys decorating...for any occasion
15. loves to plan things
16. sacrifices for her kids...like foregoing fruit so they can have it
17. loves talking to other moms
18. especially if she feels like she can help in any way
19. loves the sun
20. and reading
21. and writing
22. and baking, although sometimes it’s a chore
23. but it sure makes the house smell good!
24. hates self-righteous people
25. hates to feel looked down upon
26. has many dreams for her family and kids
27. ...a big house with a huge yard
28. ...many more siblings and a farm
29. ...enough money to substantially help family and friends
30. above all, yearns to do God’s Will for herself and the family

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words....

Or, in this case, "Nutmeg trying to get out of typing a whole lot right now" as I attempt to normalize my life after a very relaxing (read, no laundry or cleaning accomplished) week! A week with Auntie Sephora, chronicled here in many pictures, quite adorable, and this one being quite hilarious, since it perfectly captures the almost constant disposition of my darling DD #2.....Enjoy! Posted by Picasa

We went shopping with DD #3, and since there were two adults, I felt quite safe letting her out of the cart. At first, she didn't know quite what to do with herself! But don't worry, she soon realized that the products quite easily come off the shelves, and she loved being chased up and down the aisles! Posted by Picasa

DS #1 and DD #1 chillin at my cousin's baseball game. Read Sephora's post on that one, she captures the evening perfectly, since the majority of her post has to do with the ballpark's bathrooms.... (gotta love kids!) Posted by Picasa

....same baseball game, DD #2 being silly with Dan, a friend of Sephora's..... Posted by Picasa

Two of the girls, (DD #1 and DD #2) at our neighbor's pool....we took care of watering his lawn while they were out of town and got to use their beautiful pool in return! (life jackets required, since there really wasn't much of a shallow end...) Posted by Picasa

....and here we are, Sephora and I with my two oldest, the boys....(aka DS #1 and DS #2). Posted by Picasa

Good times

Life in a Nutshell

Had a wonderful time over here last night at the Nut-house entertaining my dear sister Sephora and her friends. We had a similar gathering over here last summer...

Sapientiae Amator and his lovely wife and strapping young son, Whiskey, and Windmilltilter, along with many many other fun, intelligent, musically gifted folks. All much younger than I, but amazingly able to remember most of the words to a large repretoire of songs from my old high school days (1980's) and play my guitar, long-neglected since my college days.

I haven't seen that side of midnight in goodness-knows how long, and will most likely be paying for it later....but it was worth it.

Nothing like being around a bunch of enthusiastic younger folks to keep the wheels juiced!

The best things in life....

Life in a Nutshell

sure the hell aren't free, especially when it comes to wrangling a much-needed prescription from the hands of your long-distance OB/GYN.

What a saga.

Yes, I finally got "mah drugs" and am feeling oh-so-much better, so y'all can breathe a sigh of relief and listen with horrible pleasure at the complete ineptness of the office staff of my long-distance OB/GYN.

To put things in perspective, I started this whole prescription process on TUESDAY, by trying to see if my blood test results were in yet. I found out on THURSDAY afternoon (note the 2 day lapse...I will spare you the details of my tearful pleas, my DH's attempts at reasoning with them, etc) that yes, indeedy, the results were in, I have low-progesterone, and my Dr. would be in in the morning to take care of the presription and the nurse would "definitely" call me in the morning.

Ha. What a sense of humor.

Nothing in the a.m. I got a message at 3:45pm that the Dr. had been out of the office all day (delivering babies), and I won't get my prescription until Tuesday.

Y'all know I'm from NY right? I mean, the obnoxious city part. (we eventually moved upstate where I promptly lost my awesome accent b/c I was made fun of when I read a sentence out loud my first day at my new school to my fellow second graders.....it had the words "dog", "walk", and "water" in it...) And I can really "pull it out" when I want to? It sure comes in handy!

So, I lit into the girl. Which did no good, of course. She was adamant. Her hands were tied, the messages were sitting on his desk, he wouldn't be coming back, she would not call him with my plight.

ARGH.

What to do? I knew exactly. I have this AMAZING Dr. here in Dallas, who used to be my OB/GYN, but is now just a GP (general family practitioner) and still sees my whole family. I just love her. I called her, and she (SHE, not the nurse) returned my call 15 min later, and I burst into tears (see previous post). She listened sympathetically and called my OB/GYN and talked directly to him and got it all straightened out for me.... (I told you she is amazing!)

Why is the office staff at most Dr's offices so darn afraid of the Dr. they work for? Why can't they go to bat for the patients? And why can't they let the Dr's take care of their patients? My OB/GYN is very very good, and has told me of his frusteration with his staff, but good help is hard to find!

And me? I'm back to my old sarcastic self as you can see. Just wait until I go into see my OB/GYN.....I'll be super sugary sweet to those awful nurses....

THAT will be an interesting post, I'm sure....

Hormonal Upheaval....

Life in a Nutshell

Sorry for the silence this past week. Things have been a bit rough.

This is going to be a weird post, be forewarned.

I never realized the importance of one's hormones until mine started going haywire. It turns out,(through NFP observations and subsequent blood work) I have a lower-than-normal progesterone count.....the hormone that promotes calm, a feeling of well-being, mental clarity, emotional stability.......

Now take that all away, and I'm left with feelings of loneliness, emotional instability, haziness of the brain, avoidance of friends and phone calls.....etc. Me, who is so social, and loves phone calls from out-of-state friends, has been checking the caller id and letting voice mail pick up, unless it's my doctor or my mother!

The scientist/behavioralist in me is fascinated by the impact my hormones can have on me. I have a friend who is on hormone replacement therapy, and she said that when her doses aren't exactly right, she is a blubbering mess.

Yup, that's me.

I have a real respect and heartache for those people with more serious imbalances, be it chemical or hormonal....I have never felt so completely at the mercy of my mood. It's so foreign to me.

Hopefully, this time tomorrow, DH will have stuck a needle into my thigh and administered my first dose of normalcy....and I will read this post and wonder what the heck I was talking about.

Probably like most of y'all.....but I thought I would share anyway.

I love ya', tomorrow!

Life in a Nutshell

I have spent the entire evening writing three of my children's names all over their entire wardrobes, including underwear, socks, bathing suits and towels.....

Must be time for summer camp! (Go ahead and read...it's an amazing camp.)

I am tempted to tattoo their names across their foreheads, for good measure....

This year, DD#1 will go for the first time, and I hope she won't freak out too much. The other family that we knew (or thought) was going has a little girl her age and would've been in her group, now isn't going. Huge bummer, since this little girl's older brother is the same age as my DS#2, the "meltdown king" from last year, who will now be in a different group than DS#1 this year.....(was that confusing or what?)

Long story short, if my 2 shy ones can let go and have fun it will be awesome....but if they freak out b/c they don't know anyone in their group, it will be awful.

I will definitely be praying my "allotted" 30 min per day, if not more! (yes, they ask you to pray for the camp during it's running...kinda cool)

I will also be cleaning in anticipation of a visit from my sister. Which will be very fun, indeed.
