Life in a Nutshell
I sure hope that the people who took our sons' bicycles have a real need for them. That's all I can think about them right now, because I'm mad that the bikes are gone.
But, they haven't been missed, which is weird. We just noticed it last night, and apparently the guy across the street said that his granddaughter's bike was stolen early Monday morning! So, I guess the boys won't be too upset.
Especially when they find out we'll be buying them some much-desired scooters.

Birthday (?) Weekend
Life in a Nutshell
And so, I just placed my first order with Albertsons.com, supposedly guaranteeing me at least a few extra hours this weekend to.........
1. Make 50 eggrolls for a belated First Communion Party for DS#1 and 4 other friends who will be making their First Communion this Saturday. Approximate attendance: 150 people. Glad I'm not in charge!
2. Cook a ham for same party.
3. Attend t-ball game Saturday before huge party.
4. Attend chaotic party and attempt to keep track of kiddos, especially DD#2.
5. Go to mass.
6. Attend my weekly sacrificial ritual where I run up and down an over-sized field wheezing incessantly.... you know, my soccer game!
7. Go to dinner and a "Da Vinci Code" talk given by a very important friend of mine....... no, I'm not name dropping! :)
8. Birthday? Oh yeah. I turn 34 sometime during all of this. I think it's Saturday. Yup.
So, as I'm watching my girls swing and jump and climb to ridiculous heights on the monkey bars, and see my boys join the others in a game of baseball, and as I visit with the other moms, I will thank God for my blessings and ask Him to continue to let me enjoy this time, these moments........to help me to appreciate what He has given me.

David and Goliath
Life in a Nutshell
As I write this, my kiddos are watching CCC's version of David and Goliath. It is a fairly harmless animated version, but with a drunken enraged king who wishes to kill the little hero David. It is for this reason that DS#1 refuses to watch it. DD#2, however, loves it, and it is she who has chosen it for their afternoon viewing pleasure.
The story in the New Catholic Picture Bible is still one of the boys' favorites. As a young girl, I don't ever remember the part where David chops off Goliath's head. Yet, that is my boys' favorite part. And so I am required to read that sentence over and over again.
"David took the giant's sword and cut off his head."
Gotta love those boys. May they have as much courage to slay the evil in this world.........

Swimming in the rain.....
Life in a Nutshell
Last night I took the 4 older kids to The Hilton Suites hotel downtown to visit a very dear friend of mine who was in town for her mother-in-law's wedding. Jenn is married with 3 adorable girls, and very pregnant with their first boy! It was wonderful to see them and to meet their extended family. Jenn and I have been friends for a long time...we met when we were just 9 years old! We went to college together, roommates for the first two years. As sometimes happens with close friends, some personality conflicts developed and we drifted apart. That, and I didn't get along with her then boyfriend..... But, old friendships die hard. Out of all of my friends from college, I keep in touch with her the most. Our ties go way back before even high school, and since our parents were both involved in the same Catholic community that made life in public school almost unbearable, we share a unique history. A lot of the same stories, a lot of the same laughs, and a lot of the same struggles. Awesome to see her again.
I took the kids because they were having a pool party, and since it was raining, I thought an indoor swim-fest would be ideal. The kids had a blast. All 4 are pretty independent in the water (although DD#2, at age 3, should not be...). So, with DD#2 in a lifejacket, it was relatively easy for me. We had pizza, soaked in the hot tub (even the kids...for a bit) and chatted. Because of the wedding, there were a ton of other people Jenn had to visit with too, so as we moms are used to, our chatting was just snatches here and there as I looked after my kids, and she took pictures and visited with relatives.
At 8:15, I dragged my kids away from the pool, dried them off, and piled them into the van. They were exhausted when we got home. No complaints as we plopped them into bed....and no extra requests for band-aids from DD#2!

Note to self....
Life in a Nutshell
When it is 95 degrees at 10 a.m. and you feel the need to plop 4 pieces of ice in your coffee to prevent your own sweat from um, flavoring your delicious java....
Increase the ratio of coffee to water added.
<yawn>
Not to worry, though. It may 100 degrees today, but tomorrow it will be a high of 78....

A Phone Call... (Updated)
Life in a Nutshell
...at 12:20 a.m. could be a scary thing.
Unless it's your best friend's husband (you know, your best friend that is a week overdue with #6) asking you to come stay at the house until "Grandma" can get there from Fort Worth so he can get his wife to the hospital to have their baby!
DH fielded the phone call, and since I know her babies can come quickly, I ran around the house panicking for a minute until I realized that all I needed was my shoes (by the door) and my car keys (in my purse by the door). And I was off.
Lisa looked very calm, and they both hugged me as they left. "Grandma" showed up about 30 minutes later, and I went home and slept fitfully.
I know there are people suffering every minute of every day, but when your close friend is going through labor, and you know what that's like, it's hard to roll over in good conscience and sleep blissfully...
I called her house at 7:15 a.m. and talked to "Grandma" (actually Lisa's Mom) and she told me they had had the baby at 5:15 a.m. 8lbs. 9ozs.
Welcome, Maggie! (Magdalena Collette) *that's the update* :)

Dinner conversation:
Life in a Nutshell
DS#2: (as he scoops the rice out of the pot) I don't like all this brown stuff Mom puts at the bottom....why does Mom put it in there?
DH: Mom doesn't know how to make rice without the brown stuff.
DS#2: Where does she get it?
DH: She buys it special at the store...
Me: Futon looking mighty comfy to you?
:)

Yes....
Life in a Nutshell
....we are certifiable.
We have exactly one week before big humongous expensive annual Easter party.
Instead of being practical and washing the floors, walls and windows....
We decide instead to go to Home Depot and spend more money than necessary and re-paint one wall in the dining area and one wall in the front living area....
two different colors
today.
We've finished the one wall, a green called "Mother Nature"..... and it looks pretty nice!
Onto the next wall this evening after the littles go to sleep.... "Cherry Cinnamon".
Oh! And DD#2 strikes again. DH re-painted the decorative shelves their original white b/c someone had dragged a pencil across the front of them....
And, as soon as they were dry and he hung them up, that same someone dragged a blue ballpoint pen across the front...
That someone's life-span may be drastically reduced some day.....

Fridays
Life in a Nutshell
Here's my day, in sum...... this is why I love Saturdays!
6:45 am: re-set alarm for 6:55am
6:48 am: shoo cat away from kids' window, let him in.
6:49 am: put on pot of water to boil for pasta. (no, I'm not crazy)
6:50 am: place DS#1's uniform in the dryer (instant-iron) and go wake him up.
6:55 am: listen with glee as alarm attempts to wake up DH. Get DS#1's clothes from dryer and wake him up again.
7:00 am: check on DH and DS#1 while unloading dishwasher and making DS's lunch.
7:15 am: DS appears for breakfast, uncombed, but dressed. Give him breakfast, finish the kitchen, put the pasta in the pot. (no, I'm still not crazy)
7:45 am: as DH and DS#1 leave, DD#3 wakes up. Get her a bottle, and spend a few moments snugging.
8:00 am: DD#2 has woken up, and needs breakfast, as does DD#3. Get them both seated and give them breakfast.
8:15 am: panic. wake up DD#1 and DS#2. We need to be at our homeschool co-op by 9am.
9:10 am: go to co-op. *cheesy smile*
9:10 am-12:00 pm: Co-op. DD#2 is an absolute bear making it necessary for me to take her home early, and feed her, pronto.
12:00- 2:00 pm: make lunches for kids, (remember the pasta?) clean up kitchen from breakfast and lunch. Put DD#3 down for her nap. Referee many fights.
2:00- 3:00 pm: while kids watch a video, I sit outside and chat on the phone with sister #3, a senior in high school, who is very mature and well-rounded, and just over-all a great person.
3:00 pm: get DD#3 up, change nasty pamper, hustle kids into the van to get DS#1.
3:30 pm: arrive home after playing bus driver, and cut up veggies for snack. Greet friend who is watching the littles so I can grocery shop.
3:45 pm: leave DD#3 at home, and take DD#2 the bear with me. *suffering grin*
4:55 pm: arrive home with van-ful of groceries, considerably less $$$, and a humongous head-ache.
5:00 pm: begin making dinner that needed to be cooked already, so we can go to two practices.....
5:30 pm: plop the kiddos down to protests of fish sticks...but happiness over the watermelon....
5:45 pm: kiss DH, DD#1 and DS#2 as they leave for practice. Share a bowl of black bean soup with DD#3.
6:15 pm: field a phone call about DH's practice being cancelled....YAY! so DH can take DS#1 to his practice after leaving the others here.
6:25 pm: kiss DH, and DS#1 good-bye as they head to practice. Plop 3 girls in the tub.
7:00 pm: Sit down.
Notice, I have not said I cleaned the kitchen after dinner, finished the laundry from yesterday, or unpacked the groceries.
But.
I have written this very enlightening post...

Latest and greatest...
Life in a Nutshell
....here in the nut house is the ever-debatable "what are we going to do about the kids' schooling next year?"
DH and I keep going back and forth. The problem is that we seem to have a problem deep in our gut with traditional schooling. I feel badly that DS#1 goes to school all day, comes home and has another hour of homework before he can relax and play, explore, read, create, etc. Whereas the other kids do 3 hours of work a day, then have the rest of the time to play, read, create, explore, etc. It seems that learning at home would be more natural and efficient..... BUT.
But the problem is that DS#1 is by no means efficient. He loves to avoid doing his work, and enjoys telling me what he should and should not have to do. We have noticed a slight improvement in these areas since he went to school, but mostly just less stress for me, since his main motivation has been to get his work done for Mrs. Clark the next day.
He, of course, wants to be homeschooled, since he sees how much more free time the kids here get. But, does he want it enough to work hard when I ask him to?
THAT, my friends, is the trillion-dollar question.....
As far as the other kids are concerned, homeschooling has worked really well, so there is no need to "fix what ain't broke" so to speak.
And so. That's the hot debate around here, besides the usual what to have for dinner and how many times can I scream 'Mama' before she answers......
:)

Week in review/preview
Life in a Nutshell
Got the idea for posting about the week from MTSM.....
Reading: My book club book is The Scapegoat by du Maurier, but I haven't gotten my hands on it yet. So I am reading my Magnificat and the Lenten meditations....also The Wall Street Journal, since the retired man across the street is out of town and asks us to pick up his paper for him.
Watching: DH and I are becoming addicted to the TV series Lost. The first 4 episodes were loaned to him by a co-worker, and we were hooked. So, we rented the next 4 episodes from Netflix.......
Exercise: I have been doing my stretches for my back everyday, and 30 sit-ups and 30 squats to strengthen my legs. I was hoping to go to soccer practice today, but it looks like DH will have to work late. :(
Clothing: ARGH. DD#1 desperately needs new clothes, and since Old Navy is now sporting the "long shorts" look, we need to head over there very soon. DS#1 also needs some shorts and t-shirts. Also need to get DD#1 an Easter dress..... Lots of $$$ to spend!
Family and Friends: I have spoken a few times to my friend in Georgia, it's been great to keep in touch with her. I owe a friend in Vancouver a long overdue e-mail (sorry!) and my sis a phone call (hi!) Of course, I've spoken to my Mom a few times, keeping up with all of the happenings on the home front.
Housekeeping: Double ARGH. I've done 10 loads of laundry and still have at least 2 more to do today. I've folded and put away about 4 loads and have two laundry baskets full of laundry to fold and put away. DH asks me, "Why does laundry have to be so cathartic around here?" LOL
I have a ton of cleaning to do next week to get ready for our humongous Easter Bash. Holy Week is a great time to do that extra penance!
Homeschooling: I've been very anal about getting our Math done everyday. Monday the kids did a lot of work for our co-op on Fridays, plus some reading and religion. They are always reading, so I never feel behind there. I'm always beating myself up, thinking that I should be doing more, but there are only so many hours in a day....and lots of work around the house....
In sum, I've played in one soccer game, been to two (kids) practices, cooked 16 meals, driven about 50 miles, slept 40 hours, drunk 12 cups of coffee, and cleaned up 15 spills. And I've only blogged twice. "Last thing on my mind" indeed.
More on the kiddos next post....

Good-bye March, hello sports!
Life in a Nutshell
Well, I made it through March...how'd y'all do?
I find that for some reason, March is my hardest month. Maybe it's Lent, maybe it's the expectation of Spring, maybe it's 31 long days before April.
I usually go into hibernation for awhile. My mood seems "off", my friendships are all going to pot, and even DH annoys me. But, I keep it to myself... :) Because I know it's me! And why bug others with my own bad mood? And so now it's April. AHHHHHH
<relief>
Sunday was my soccer game. 92 degrees, and very sunny...but thank goodness for the wind. Our team really played well. I think we are starting to finally play together. A few funny asides..... the majority of the team is Hispanic, including the coach. He yells at everyone in Spanish, including me. :) The game was very exciting, and I was able to tie the game with 30 seconds left. I remember now why I love the game of soccer so much....
Things on the home front have been crazy, but good. DS#1 started soccer 2 weeks ago and has his first game this Saturday. Like his Dad, I think he is destined to play goal. Luckily, they will also play him out, so maybe he'll be a forward like his Mama. :)
DS#2 and DD#1 started T-ball last Friday, with DH coaching. DS#1 is the most experienced and DD#1 the least. It's a relatively new team this year, with many new kids. DH is sooo patient! And the kiddos are just adorable at this age.....
So, we are a "sports family" right now. I'm glad that DH and I are like-minded in that area. My Dad was a high school coach--soccer, basketball and softball (girls). And so I am used to being involved in these activites. It's great for the kids and fun to get together with the other families and chat and watch the kids play.
Spring in Texas! Yay!

Yay!
