Another "Rejected by Employer" Poem...

I should note that this one was "rejected" because it was deemed too complex for 5th graders.  Given the ones my 1st grader has to memorize, I disagree.  I'm not holding the purse-strings, however.....
:P

HOPPITY-HO

Peter the Rabbit is showing his skin
His cousin did once realize.
He served him tomatoes
And day-old potatoes
But couldn’t increase his size.

To the garden we go, hoppity-ho!
But his mother shivered and shook,
"No! No! If you do,
They’ll turn you to stew
For the wife, she's a fiery cook!"

The cousin did scoff, as he said in reply,
"Dear Auntie, you must worry so.
That silly old farmer
Though not quite the charmer,
Is hopelessly feeble and slow."

So Cousin and Peter did set off in haste
To fool the Farmer just so.
What they failed to consider
Was that he’s just no quitter
And he’d learned to jump: hoppity-ho!

Early Morning

Standing at the precipice
About to hurl myself over the edge
of today,
I wonder at my past folly.

To leap and not to care
if the net was secure
if the wind was right
if I was right.

To leap and not wonder
at the uncertainty of
the day ahead.
All that would happen.
Not to wonder
was I ready?

What folly
to cast myself into today
and not secure the bindings
and make safe my path
through His love
of words
and comfort.

And step out, firmly tethered
to weather the storms
directing my ship
with His hand
and
ride the waves of grace.

Ponderings in Blogland

Wandering

through my archives

I come across

from time to time

a few names

commenters

who used to frequent this blog

Sharing

my life

my struggles

with one heart

and trueness

way back

in my fledgling

beginnings

And I wonder

Where are they now

How have they weathered their storms

Has life treated them gently

For a few

though

I wonder

what I have done

deserving of this frigid silence

Ah... but

Ignorance

Is it bliss

akin to hair flips

and then

flippant tones

No

No

That is not the way

Peace, then,

instead

and love

Love and good will

stretches my heart

expands my soul

expands my life

Poetry Friday

From the "rejected by employer" department:

THE CATCH

Wind-whipped blue sky
Mountains rushing past.
Orange vest
Life is best
On the oceans vast.

Fish, birds, swim, fly
Sea salt and water wet
Curved line
Life is fine
Flippers in the net.

One, three, seven, ten!
Pouring through the hatch.
In the hull
Life is full
Bringing home the catch

Only Five

Only five, I answer the woman, apologetically
as she peels and chops tomatoes, her life swirling around her.
Her children are numerous, and they run and dance
as she laughs and brushes them away.

Only five, I answer hesitantly as the woman bristles in dismay.
Her glance disdains a life ill-lived
and her coldness clucks at her tongue
as the icicles stab further into her own unloved heart.

Only five, I whisper to my Maker
agony and pain clenching my heart.
He holds me up and begs me to see
to fix my eyes on Him and trust His plans.

Only five, I sob to my friend
the dearest to me in the world.
She takes my hands and honors me
with a share in the life of one of her own...

to hold and protect, to pray for and love with.
She points to my heart, reveals the love and the care
for those far and those underfoot and near
showing me how very full and so very rich
only five can be.

The Taming of the 'Do

You come to me, all pouty-faced.
Your curls are all askew.
A brush is dangling in the mess
of summer's sticky dew.

The straight smooth hair of older sis
has captured all of your thoughts.
You beg me with your eyes of blue
to tame your curly locks.

Reluctantly I plug it in
and expectantly you wait.
This magical black instrument
will change your curly fate.

As Mama works methodically,
your legs bounce up and down.
It's hard to be so patient
in your change to princess from clown.

And when she is done, to the mirror you run
anxious to see the effect.
Alas for the Mama when she examines her work,
if even one stray curl is left.

Texas in summer is hot and cruel
especially for one so small.
To have a head filled with lustrous curls
just isn't fair at all.

Ode to a Germ...

O stomach bug, O stomach bug
Why do you still pursue us?
O stomach bug O stomach bug
What have we done to earn thus?

When you insist
and stay so near...
we can't enjoy
our Christmas cheer.

O stomach bug O stomach bug
Why do you thus pursue us?

You guessed it. We still got it. And I'm not talking about any misplaced 30-something hipness.

My mantra is... better this week than next week.

Happy Epiphany all!

Oh to be a Cat...

... wearing a hat

sitting like that

all cute and fat.

If he were awake

What would he think of that?

Perspective

Larger than life
throws you
take a deep breath

feel your mortality

rain and tears
clear the air
sharpens the eyes

sharpens your view

life and not
pain and love
joy in both

beauty in all

S. T. I. C. K. Y.

Legs stick to chairs stick to floors

Arms stick to tables

Fingers stick

Like everything is covered in hot-boiled, starting-to-cool maple syrup

Where the sky is a-glow with the setting sun

And the trees are on fire

And the clouds are booming and gathering in the distance

Someone hand me a butter knife

So I can slice through and emerge

Refreshed

Rejuvenated
